Thì hiện tại đơn (Present Simple Tense) là một trong những thì quan trọng nhất trong tiếng Anh, được sử dụng phổ biến trong giao tiếp và viết học thuật. Tuy nhiên, nhiều người học vẫn mắc lỗi khi chia động từ hoặc sử dụng thì này không chính xác. Cách dùng và chức năng của thì hiện tại đơn:
- Diễn tả một sự thật hiển nhiên được nhiều người biết và công nhận về tự nhiên, xã hội, thế giới,…
- Diễn tả thói quen sinh hoạt, tính chất, đặc điểm, tính cách, sở thích,… lâu dài, khó có khả năng thay đổi.
- Diễn tả những sự sắp xếp thời gian chính thức, cố định và khó có khả năng thay đổi như lịch tàu, xe, máy bay, lịch học, lịch trình du lịch,…
- Đưa ra hướng dẫn hay mệnh lệnh.
- Thay thế cho thì tương lai đơn trong mệnh đề chỉ thời gian bắt đầu bằng các liên từ thời gian, như when (khi), as soon as (ngay khi), until (tới khi), after (sau khi), before (trước khi),…
- Sử dụng trong cả hai mệnh đề của câu điều kiện loại 0.
- Sử dụng trong trong mệnh đề if của câu điều kiện loại 1.
Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì hiện tại đơn:
- Có một trong các trạng từ chỉ tần xuất sau:
- always (constantly): luôn luôn, mọi lúc
- usually (frequently): thường xuyên
- often: thường thường
- sometimnes: đôi khi
- seldom (rarely): hiếm khi
- hardly ever: gần như không bao giờ
- never: không bao giờ
- Có cụm once/ twice/ three times/ four times/… + a week/ month/…
- Có cụm every + đơn vị chỉ thời gian.
- Có cụm every + số lượng + đơn vị chỉ thời gian ở số nhiều.
Cách chia động từ thì hiện tại đơn:
- Với động từ thường
- Kết thúc bằng -s, o, -x, -z, -ch, -sh, -ss: thêm es
- Kết thúc bằng 1 nguyên âm + y: giữ “y” + s
- Kết thúc bằng 1 phụ âm + y: thay “y” thành “i” + es
- Với động từ to be
- I => am
- He/ She/ It => is
- You/ We/ They => are
