Quá khứ đơn và quá khứ tiếp diễn là hai trong số các thì tiếng Anh cơ bản nhất. Tuy nhiên không phải ai cũng biết cách sử dụng hai thì này đúng ngữ cảnh để diễn đạt đúng hàm ý mà mình muốn truyền tải. 1. Phân biệt công thức thì Quá khứ đơn và Quá khứ tiếp diễn

Công thức thì Quá khứ đơn và Quá khứ tiếp diễn:

Loại câu	Thì Quá khứ đơn	Thì Quá khứ tiếp diễn
Thể khẳng định	S + was/ were + adj/ noun  S  + V2/ V-ed  + Object	S + was/ were + V-ing
Thể phủ định	S + was not/ were not + adj/ noun  S +  did  not + verb (base form) + object	S + wasn’t/ weren’t + V-ing
Câu nghi vấn (Yes/ No question)	Was/ Were + S + adj/ noun? => Yes, S + was/ were     No, S + wasn’t/ weren’. Did + S + verb + Object?  => Yes, S +  did        No, S + did not	Was/ Were + S + V-ing ? => Yes, S + was/ were     No, S + wasn’t/ weren’t.
Câu nghi vấn (WH-question)	When/ Where/ Why/ What/ How/ Who  + were/ was + S  + adj/N? When/ Where/ Why/ What/ How +  did + S  + verb (base form) + object?	When/ Where/ Why/ What/ How + was/ were + S + V-ing?

Cách dùng thì quá khứ đơn và thì quá khứ tiếp diễn:

• Thì Quá khứ đơn: Dùng để diễn tả một hành động đã xảy ra và hoàn thành trong quá khứ.

• Thì Quá khứ tiếp diễn: Dùng để diễn tả một hành động đã xảy ra và kéo dài trong quá khứ.

Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ đơn và thì quá khứ tiếp diễn:

Thì Quá Khứ Đơn	Thì Quá Khứ Tiếp Diễn
Khi trong câu xuất hiện những cụm từ chỉ thời gian  như: – yesterday – in the past – the day before – ago – in và năm trong quá khứ (in 1989)  – last (week, year, month) – những khoảng thời gian đã qua trong ngày (today, this morning, this afternoon).	– Trạng từ chỉ thời gian như at, in, yesterday – At that time, at this time, in the past, last (day, night, week, month, year) – Các cấu trúc câu có từ “while” và một số trường hợp có “when”
